Brading Roman Villa

Sacrifices and Slayings

According to the author Coxe in ‘Haunted Britain’, there was once a ‘sacred grove of oaks’ here where Druids held an annual sacrifice by burning a man in a wicker cage. On the banks of the River Yar, there was once a village that was burned to the ground as a result of a holy man was slain at a well. However, Coxe does not state who this holy man was, but does recommend reading Tales and Legends of the Isle of Wight by Elder, who devoted 47 pages to the story.
